The Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) at the University of Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Université Paris Saclay (UPS) in France, and the French Embassy in Ghana, is excited to announce a comprehensive five-day hands-on Geant4 course. This event is scheduled to take place at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences in Accra, Ghana, from March 18 to March 22, 2024.
The Geant4 course is made possible through the generous funding and support from Université Paris Saclay in France, facilitated by the Direction des Relations Internationales et Européenes (DRIE).
Geant4, a powerful software toolkit written in C++, is designed for simulating the tracking of particles in matter using the Monte Carlo approach. Developed and maintained by an international collaboration of scientists from various institutions, Geant4 finds applications in diverse fields such as high energy physics, astrophysics, medical physics, particle astrophysics, and nuclear physics.
The course structure will involve a balance of lectures and hands-on exercises aimed at developing a user application. Participants will embark on a step-by-step learning journey, gaining proficiency in using the Geant4 toolkit and developing applications. The topics covered during the course include:
To participate, a basic level of proficiency in the C++ programming language is required. This includes understanding basic syntax, if statements, loop constructs, functions, pointers, references, passing function arguments, classes (definition, implementation, data members, member functions/methods, static data members, base class, and derived class), and familiarity with the standard template library (iostream, vector).
The Geant4 School is tailored for master’s students, PhD students, post-docs, and young researchers affiliated with universities or research institutes. On the final day of the School, participants will have the opportunity to assess their learning through a written exam. Successful completion of the test will be acknowledged with a formal certificate, and attendees can also request a simple attendance certificate.
The c++ tutorial will be held on Friday 29 February 2024: 14:00 – 17:30 CET ( 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM GMT). The tutorial takes just half a day (3 hours + 30min break), and then there is proposed project for ~2 hours as a homework. The participants can send their solution to get feedback.
Participants will need a computer with a C++ compiler. Follow the links below to get prerequisite information
Participants are recommended to bring their own laptops (with a virtual machine) with Linux and a ready installed Geant4 and python installation.
